In the aftermath of the Civil War, Captain Kidd travels from town to town reading news. Through an unexpected turn of events, he ends up being in charge of transporting a young girl to her relatives. This girl had been captured by Indians when she was little, her parents and sister were killed. She was raised with the Kiowa tribe and to her, that’s her family. She was recently rescued and has to be returned to her closest living relatives. But for her, all she sees is that she’s been torn from the home she knows. Captain Kidd agrees to return her to her aunt and uncle. They set off on this journey and what transpires pulls at all the heart strings. This story had me laughing at times, angry at times, in tears at times.

I never really thought that I would get into a western novel. I have never really been a fan of western movies and just pretty much assumed I wouldn’t be a fan of western books. But News of the World proved that assumption wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and quickly became invested in the two main characters, Captain Kidd and Johanna. I also love a story of unlikely friendships/relationships and this is definitely one of those. The story pulled me in from the beginning and kept me reading right to the very end. News of the World is a powerful story with characters you will not forget.
